Manners for Walking in the City

Keep control of your dog at all times. Walk your dog on a short leash, keeping your dog close. (County Code Title 10, Section 10.32.010)

Do not let your dog meet another without first speaking with the owner. This is for you and your dog's safety as well as the safety of the other pet and owner.

Walk your dog on the "curb side" of the street, hence the phrase "Curb Your Dog". Instruct your dog to urinate near the curb or in tree wells. DO NOT let your dog urinate on signs, buildings, trash cans, or parking meters. If your dog tries to, instruct them firmly "NO", and move them to an appropriate location.

Do Not let your dog defecate in front of building entrances, "Curb Your Dog". Pick up and dispose of your dog's poop, every time. (SDMC 44.0304.1)
Manners for the Dog Park

Make sure your dog is up to date on their shots. Make sure your dog wears tags identifying your dog is up to date. (Calif. Health and Safety Code, Sec. 1920 and County Code Title 10, Sec. 10.20.220)

Do not bring a bitch in heat or an un-neutered male to the dog park.

Even at off leash parks, pay attention, and maintain control of your dog at all times.

Same as the street; clean up after your dog.

Do not bring aggressive dogs, sick or overly nervous dogs to the dog park.

When a dog is presented on a leash to a group of off-leash dogs, you're gonna have a bad time.

If you chose to pet another dog, consider it at your own risk. The best course of action is to lt the dog see and smell your hand before petting the dog.
Manners for Apartment Living

License your dog every year in accordance with county and/or city regulations. Make sure your dog wears the metal license tag on their collar at all times. (Calif. Health and Safety Code Sec. 1920, Calif. Food and Agriculture Code Sec. 30502 and County code Sec. 10.20.190) (SDMC 44.0322)

Spay or Neuter your dog. This often helps subdue some bad behaviors such as aggressiveness, barking, and marking. It will also prevent unwanted breeding and menses.

Train your dog not to bark when you aren't home. Train them to stop barking on command when you are. (California Penal Code 373A and San Diego County Code 62.672.)

Train your dog in basic commands; sit, stay, heel, come...

Have your dog sit and stay in one place while riding in an elevator.

Do not let your dog lunge, rush toward, or bark at people or other dogs.

If your dog makes a mess in the lobby, elevator, hall or common area, Clean it Up!

Do not own a dog you cannot handle or are afraid of.
